What seemed at first seemed like a minor and perhaps innocent consequence of the actions on Wyrmrokk, set in effect a chain of events, which would lead to a downright spiral for the World of Selandor as we knew it. In the 45 years since the discoveries on Wyrmrokk, the Church of the Nine lost nearly all of its power, after the trials of Voelva and the failure to find the ancient relic on Danesh. As the last source of stability withered, Arendor in particular faced some of the most turbulent times in centuries.
The Kingdom of Arendor is not what it once was. Centuries without a strong centralized government has created chaos amongst the nobility. Ambitious lords and ladies compete and undermine one another for wealth and power. The situation only worsened after the Gods became silent.
A decade ago, the former Lord Regent passed, leaving the young heir of House Varcalén of Aelién to take the seat. This Lord Regent was young, easily manipulated and inexperienced, which quickly became the cause of even more chaos and unrest. However, amidst this chaos, the ambitious Duke Darien Ashwarden accumulated power, while waiting for a golden opportunity.
Almost simultaneously to this turn of events, a mysterious island appeared on a major trading route between Nordur, Arendor, and the East - and messengers arrived at every major city in Selandor carrying letters that read as follows;
“Greetings, people of Selandor. I welcome any and all interested to engage in trade with my land, Venaris, and the trade routes beyond it. For a small fee, I will allow any ship safe harbor and trade rights. All I ask in return is that none enter into my lands beyond this harbor, uninvited.
Nylisa Ravenheart, Queen of Venaris ”
A few weeks after, trade ships from Venaris arrived at several major ports with their coffers filled to the brim with gold and gems. The Venari merchants traded their wealth and filled their ships with resources until they could carry no more. As a result, the Venari fleet became famous and was dubbed “The Golden Fleet”.
Quickly, Venaris itself became a center for trade and one of the most important ports on the wealthiest trade route in Selandor. Despite the high traffic, little was known about Venaris beyond it’s Port town. Countless spies were sent find out more about the island, but few ever returned, and those that did came back with no results.
However, only a few months ago a spy serving Duke Ashwarden discovered a gold and diamond mine hidden in the island. Seeing the huge opportunity, the Duke sent a group of colonists to settle on the island. Almost immediately, the colony was destroyed by the Queen’s men. The message from the Queen was clear “Do not test me.”. However, the Queen’s actions played into the Duke’s hands well. He mustered an army, readied his fleet, and announced that he’d pay all willing mercenaries, crafters and settlers 50 silver coins to join his colony on Venaris.
Which Giant will fall next, we can not yet foretell. That chapter is for you to write.
